Death of high street
There has been much talk recently of the death of the high street shop. While a complete wipeout is unlikely, the steady move from offline to online shopping is continuing apace, and is likely to do so for the forseeable future.
It's a shame, but there it is. That all important bottom line - especially so given the pressure on discretionary income.
While freely available e-commerce software becomes more mature, and people's confidence in e-business increases, the costs to run a high street shop only seems to increase - higher rents, higher fuel and parking costs, higher wage costs, etc.
But if you have a high street shop and are resisting e-business, don't stress. Having a high street presence adds credibility and brand awareness to your online presence. The two can complement each other. It shouldn't be an either or, but a strategic realignment.
Perhaps you could remove your high street shop to an area of lower rent; reduce staff; and hold less inventory. With the capital freed up, you can focus on your online presence, and develop marketing campaigns that leverage both the online and offline presences.
